Hands On: MSI's GL62 Budget Gaming Laptop

MSI is known for super fancy gaming laptops with multiple GPUs, high quality mechanical keyboards, and high refresh displays. While there is no doubt a market for these beasts, it would be a shame if gamers on a stricter budget were left out in the cold.

MSI’s new GL62 15.6” laptop is aiming to address that issue, and attempts to combine the most important performance features with a "bargain" price point. Bargain for a gaming laptop, that is. Most new gaming laptops start over $1500.

You can pick up the MSI GL62 for $1,099.

Power on a Budget

The GL62 may be priced low, but it’s still packing a pretty serious punch. Of particular interest to gamers is is the GTX 1050 Ti, which means AAA games at high FPS at 1080p. It’s also got an i7 CPU, 512GB of SSD storage, and 16GB of RAM.

If you’re someone who prefers to game on an external display, you’re in luck. In addition to the standard HDMI output, the GL62 also has a mini DisplayPort, so you can have up to three displays running simultaneously if you’re so inclined.

The GL62 also has USB 3.0 Type-C, an SD card reader, and an ethernet port if you prefer the stability of a wired connection.

Design Secrets

The GL series has been altered from past iterations in substantial ways, with a particular emphasis on latest GPU thermal requirements and refreshed design. At 5.29 pounds and just over an inch in thickness, MSI is putting priority on internal cooling and performance over ultra slim proportions. That weight is offset by the new tapered design, so it’s a pleasure to carry around.

Like the higher end MSI gaming laptops, the GL series uses the great Steelseries backlit keyboard with red backlighting. It’s nice to see a full keyboard too, you never know when a 10 key pad could come in handy.

The 15.6 Inch display is 1080p with a matte finish and a pretty wide viewing angle of 170 degrees. Refresh rate is 60Hz which makes sense -- you’d only need higher refresh if you had a higher end GPU.

Bring on the Heat

The MSI GL62 is a gaming laptop, so you can assume it’s going to get a little toasty during extended gameplay. Though there is no question it gets warmer during use, it never gets scorching hot like some of the other gaming laptops out there. That’s in no small part due to Cooler Boost 4, MSI’s six heat pipe cooling apparatus.

The Cost of Performance

You can get higher end GPUs in a laptop, but certainly not at this price. The GL62 is designed for someone who wants to play AAA games at 1080p, but doesn’t need crazy high refresh rates or resolutions.

We’re all for price point variation. The more people who join the master race the better, regardless of how much they want to spend.

The MSI GL62 is all about price/performance, and the balance struck with this laptop makes it a very compelling entry point into the high end gaming laptop market. With its new overall design made for 10 series NVIDIA GPUs and better thermal management, it’s easy to recommend the GL series.

Especially at that smoking $1,099 price point.
